Rome's Best Travel Routes

Curated routes. Authentic stories. The real city behind the postcards.

Airport Connections

Getting from the airport to the city is often the first stress test for travelers. Here’s how to make it smooth.

Rome has two main airports: Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) and Ciampino. Planning your transportation to and from these airports in advance can save you time and hassle. Fiumicino, the larger of the two, is well connected to the city via the Leonardo Express train, which takes you directly to Termini Station (Rome’s central hub for trains, buses, and the metro). This train runs frequently from early morning until late at night but cost €11. Alternatively, you can take one of the several buses that also connect the airport to various parts of the city, including Termini, which are more at a budget (about €6). If you’re arriving or departing at odd hours, there are even a few night buses available.

Ciampino Airport, which is smaller and primarily used by budget airlines, is only accessible by bus. These buses run from the airport to the Anagnina metro station (on line A), and from there, you can connect to the rest of the city. Be mindful that buses stop operating around 11 pm, so if you’re arriving late, plan accordingly.

If you prefer a more comfortable transfer, taxis are available at both airports. However, be cautious when choosing a cab, as some drivers may overcharge tourists. Always take an official white taxi—these are regulated by the city—and make sure the meter is running or that you agree on the fare beforehand. You can call the official city taxi service at +39060609 or by app, or find a cab at designated stands outside major landmarks and airports. There is also an app for both iOS and Android that helps you make the reservation smoother and also book with some advance.

Fiumicino (FCO, Leonardo da Vinci)

  • Leonardo Express: €14, 32 minutes non-stop to Termini. Reliable, but Termini isn’t always the nicest arrival point.
  • Regional train: €8, stops at Trastevere, Ostiense, and Tiburtina—useful if your hotel is near those stations.
  • Bus shuttles: €6–€7, 45–60 minutes, companies like Terravision or SIT.
  • Taxi: €50 fixed rate to central Rome.

Ciampino (CIA)

  • Smaller, used by low-cost airlines.
  • Bus + Metro: Shuttle bus to Anagnina metro station (Line A), then metro to the center.
  • Direct bus: SIT, Terravision, etc. to Termini. Takes 40–50 minutes, €5–€6.
  • Taxi: €31 fixed rate to central Rome.

⚠️ Watch out: Always confirm the flat fare before departure. If a driver tries to switch on the meter, insist on the fixed price.

📝 Local Tip: If you plan to arrive after 11 p.m., book a taxi in advance, don’t rely on public transportation.
