Rome is generally safe, but some areas are less pleasant for travelers, especially after dark. These aren’t dangerous in the sense of constant crime, but they can feel uncomfortable, chaotic, or poorly lit.
Stations and Surroundings
- Termini is Rome’s main train station, and while it’s essential for transport, the area around it is gritty.
- Tiburtina and other minor stations are also to be avoided for safety in the darkest hours.
- You’ll find cheap hostels and budget hotels, but also pickpockets, aggressive touts, and occasional scams.
- Streets near Via Giolitti, Piazza Vittorio, and Viale Libia can feel unsafe at night.
⚠️ Watch out: Don’t linger outside Termini and other train stations after midnight waiting for a taxi. Call one in advance or use an official taxi stand.
Sketchy Alleys at Night
- Even in good neighborhoods, some backstreets can be poorly lit and deserted.
- Trastevere and Monti, while charming, have side alleys that feel very different once the crowds disappear.
- Avoid the city outskirts at night, especially if you are alone.
- Don’t accept rides from random people, always call an official taxi or use public transportation.
- Rule of thumb: if a street feels too quiet and you see nobody around, take a parallel one.
📝 Local Tip: Romans avoid walking alone with luggage at night in isolated streets—follow their lead. Better to take a short taxi ride than risk discomfort.
