Ordering Food The Roman Way

Ordering in Rome follows a rhythm. Knowing it will save you confusion and embarrassment.

  • Meal structure: Antipasto (starter), primo (pasta or soup), secondo (meat or fish), contorno (side dish), dolce (dessert), caffè (coffee), digestivo (after-dinner liquor). You don’t have to order all, but that’s the traditional order.
  • Cappuccino rule: Never order cappuccino after lunch or dinner. Romans see it as too heavy after meals. Stick to espresso, but in a bar, not at the restaurant.
  • Splitting bills: Italians rarely split checks item by item. Usually, one person pays, or the total is divided equally.
  • Bread & water: You may be charged a small fee for bread and table service (coperto). This is normal.

📝 Local Tip: If you don’t want bread, politely refuse it when served to avoid being charged for it. Say “No, grazie, senza pane.” Table service might be included in the dish price or not, always check the menu.
