Rome's Best Travel Routes

Curated routes. Authentic stories. The real city behind the postcards.

Quick Checklist of Do’s and Don’ts

After exploring the city for a few days, it helps to review the essentials that keep you safe and stress-free. Use this list as a final reminder before heading out each morning.

Do’s

  • Keep valuables in a zipped crossbody bag worn in front.
  • Stay alert on crowded metro lines A and B, especially around Termini, and on buses 64, 62, and 40.
  • Use only official white taxis or apps like FreeNow.
  • Learn a few Italian words like “scusi” (excuse me) and “grazie”. They make interactions smoother.
  • Carry small bills and coins. Many cafés and kiosks don’t like breaking €50 notes.
  • Drink from public fountains (nasoni) to save money and stay hydrated. 🚶

Don’ts

  • Don’t accept “free” bracelets, roses, or trinkets from street vendors—they’re never free.
  • Don’t leave bags hanging on chair backs or phones on café tables. Pickpockets strike quickly.
  • Don’t wander into unlit alleys late at night; stick to lively, well-lit streets.
  • Don’t climb fountains or monuments. Apart from fines, it’s considered disrespectful.
  • Don’t buy transport tickets from strangers—always use official machines or apps.
  • Don’t assume traffic will stop for you at crosswalks. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. 🚶

📝 Local Tip: Romans look confident when they cross busy streets. It’s not bravery—it’s strategy. A clear, steady walk signals drivers to slow down. Hesitating mid-crossing confuses them.
