Rome's Best Travel Routes

Curated routes. Authentic stories. The real city behind the postcards.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Avoiding the Tourist Tax

Taxis in Rome have a reputation: some drivers are honest, others try to “add a little extra” for tourists. With the right knowledge, you’ll ride without stress.

  • White cars with the “TAXI” sign on the roof and the city crest on the door.
  • Base fare: €3 during the day, €4.50 at night, €6.50 Sundays/holidays.
  • Moving inside the city can cost up to €25 depending on the distance.
  • Airport flat rates: €50 to/from Fiumicino, €31 to/from Ciampino (valid only from central areas).

⚠️ Watch out: Agree on “tariffa fissa” (fixed rate) before airport rides. If the driver refuses, get out and take another taxi.

How to Get a Taxi

  • Hail at official taxi stands (fermate taxi)—you won’t find them cruising like in New York.
  • Call +39060609 (multi-lingual service) or use the IT Taxi or FreeNow apps.

📝 Local Tip: Never accept rides from men shouting “taxi” inside stations or at the airport exit. They’re unlicensed and often charge double or triple.
