Aperitivo is more than a drink; it’s a social ritual, the bridge between afternoon and dinner. It’s the Roman way of slowing down and catching up with friends before the evening meal. Aperitivo is a lifestyle, not just a drink.
- Timing: Usually between 17:00 and 19:30. Too early, and bars aren’t ready; too late, and it merges into dinner.
- Drinks: The classics are Aperol Spritz, Campari Spritz, Negroni, Americano. Wine or prosecco are equally popular. You don’t have to drink alcohol if you don’t want to: try a juice.
- Food: Some places serve just chips and olives; others offer generous buffets with pastas, pizzas, and cold cuts. In the latter case, one drink gives you access to unlimited snacks.
⚠️ Watch out: If a spritz costs more than €12, you’re in a tourist trap. Average Roman price is €6–€8, usually including snacks.
📝 Local Tip: For a light Roman-style aperitivo, order a “calice di vino bianco” (a chilled glass of white wine) with a small plate of olives, chips or supplì. It’s what locals enjoy in neighborhood bars before heading home from work.
